A classic, if perhaps minor, film by the greatest French director of all time. It is evident, in this 1936 film, which is situated in Renoir's career between two masterpieces, UNE PARTIE DE CAMPAGNE and LA GRANDE ILLUSION, how much Gorky's story from which it is taken, the transposition of the Russian climate among the misfits of Paris, exerted a great fascination on the director's inspiration. The film's limits, as well as its merits, lie in this attraction. Which makes the work a gallery of extraordinary types, teeming with life and personality; as well as incomparably directed by the director, and played by memorable actors, first and foremost Louis Jouvet.

Interestingly, the film's entire final sequence is a tribute to one of the directors for whom Renoir professed the greatest admiration, Charlie Chaplin (the second being Eric Stroheim). Indeed, the scene of the picnic on the grass by the side of the road, and, above all, the final shot of the two of them walking away from each other in the perspective of the road, with the two policemen leaving, framing them, in the other direction, are typically Chaplinian.
