Staremo a vedere.

____________________________________________________________________________

The story of Nanni Moretti is quite extraordinary in the consumeristically regulated system of European cinema. The author, in his early twenties, of a super eight film, IO SONO UN AUTARCHICO, which was lucky enough to enter the major distribution circuit, Moretti signed his second feature film, the first in a non-amateur format. And he finds himself representing Italy at the Cannes Film Festival. Enthusiastic (Italian) critics, a little out of conviction, a lot out of fear of missing the bus of discovering new talent. Moretti certainly has talent. And if he does not let himself be crushed by the mechanism of Italian stardom (especially that of so-called escapist cinema), he will undoubtedly be an inspired author of tomorrow's cinema.

In ECCE BOMBO there is no shortage of lapses, much naivety, many almost goliardic effects. And there is the influence of Buster Keaton, Woody Allen and Fellini. But Moretti's great weapon is self-irony. Not only has he put up a poster of Buster Keaton on the wall of his house, he even has a character of Fellini's say: look how beautiful, it looks like a scene from Fellini Moretti, that is, knows how to learn from the greats (there is no doubt that Woody Allen is the right path for a temperament like his) but he possesses the intelligence to transform the suggestions of the masters into cultured quotations for film library employees.

Self-irony is, moreover, at the heart of this Vitelloni story of the 1970s: the lament of a group of young Romans who refuse self-pity, however, and who observe themselves with irony that is at times extremely biting. The cult of youth, the anguished chasing of parents eager not to be outdone by the times, the language and foibles of mannerist 'gauchisme', group meetings, management, consciences, gestures, free radios, film clubs, festivals, sexual relations, everything is seen with a fierce yet delicate eye of one who wishes to bring it all back to the feet of the Myth. Moretti's humour, like Allen's, is based on words, on dialogue. The image is sparse, perhaps because of economy of means, but probably even more so because of a wise desire not to interfere with the word. Situations, dictated by dialogue, are quickly hinted at. And then interrupted in the middle, as soon as their meaning is understood. These clipped phrases, these hints that are never insistent, indicate that Moretti already possesses his own style, his own way of conceiving the structure of the cinematic comic.

Admittedly, it is an insufficiently constructed film, lacking in progression, and with an ending that ends, as the French say, in a fishtail. But the eye, perhaps even more than the tongue, Nanni Moretti undoubtedly possesses. We shall see.
