Meglio saperlo.

* * * (*)  FAVOLACCE (BAD TALES), by  Fabio e Damiano D'Innocenzo, con Elio Germano, Tommaso Di Cola, Giulietta Rebeggiani, Gabriel Montesi, Justin Korovkin (Italy 2020)

Better to know. Everything begins in a pleasant, nonchalant way; to end in much more, and also in the tragic. It is not by chance that this second feature film, entitled Favolacce - Bad Tales , which in English has been translated even more explicitly into ugly stories, and was shot in just two years by the little more than thirty-year-old D'Innocenzo twins.

The terraced houses shot from above make us realize that we are in one of the suburbs of Rome that the cinema has long investigated. They are tidy, some of them with a swimming pool, even if they are inflatable. We are just not, in short, in a film by Pasolini. Nothing sleazy, a certain well-being, almost reassuring. And that "almost" perhaps because of that family, once inside the house, complete with father, mother and children. Mute, motionless, totally absent: in the face of the television screen that is dwelling on the daily crime news.

Of course, the barely faded hypocrisy, the ignorant machismo of the fathers, the disconsolate and resigned indifference of the mothers will soon emerge. But what reassures us already at the beginning are those children, all of them scholastically diligent, with their mute smiles, the comforting angles of their skillfully carpeted looks. Against all that background, little bourgeois, normal. Of that normality that has been with us for some time now, all apparent. By now we know: the film is a fairy tale, but a black fairy tale.

Debuting in 2018 with the interesting La terra dell'abbondanza, Fabio and Damiano D'Innocenzo were already back at the Berlinale this year, but in Competition. To almost clamorously establish themselves as one of the few revelations of this year grama Covid: Silver Bear for Best Screenplay then, once back home, Nastro d'Argento as Best Italian film, next to those for Production, Screenplay, Photography, Costumes. All these awards Favolacce - Bad Tales really deserves them: for the evidence of his courage that is not only the result of ambition, challenge and quality of his workmanship. At a time when cinema often seems to fail to emerge with an originality all its own.

Favolacce - Bad Tales is then a film that cannot be forgotten, without being easy. It exalts for all those aspects of it; without avoiding being indisposed at the same time. Progressively, it is composed in a surprising expressive mastery; to end in an upsurge, absolutely significant but not for this consolatory. It digs in continuity, often with its close-ups, always thanks to the light: thus investigating, with a determination and originality that allow us to glimpse the future role of its authors in the next Italian cinema, the loneliness of children and adolescents. Seen not so much and more banally as victims, but as witnesses. So aware of the world proposed by adults that they chose not to be part of it.
