Ambitious, in the good sense of the word. Yes, much good can be said of the cinema of M. Night Shyanalan, born in India as his name suggests but raised in the United States. Without renouncing a more discreet part of evil. Not so much, in this case, for the curious if not exactly gripping story it tells, inspired by the graphic novel "The Sandcastle" by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederick Peeters. A family going on holiday in a traditional luxury resort, two parents who are in a situation of existential or emotional crisis, the hotelier's proposal to spend a day on a splendid and above all exclusive beach, in the sole company of a privileged few...

Except that, all too soon, we realise that someone is peering at us through a telescope, from the top of the cliff. Only then, in addition to the succession of events that we won't tell you about, that mysterious gaze will turn out to be that of the spectators. In the meantime, it seems to become more and more evident how difficult it is to leave that beach; just as evident is the fact that some of the protagonists are suddenly growing old. These are the consequences of time, which is increasingly becoming the real protagonist of a story that not by chance is entitled Old. A year on that beach passes in a day; perhaps in an hour.

Since his clamorous debut in 1999 with The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan has earned his more than flattering reputation in the space of metaphysical disquiet, in a cinema which, let's admit, is all too often conformist. In his best moments, of the horror-fantastic-metaphysical: but whether these three components develop coherently and creatively in Old remains to be seen. Piling up on its shore a necklace of laboriously identifiable characters in tow of a script that is not always evident, the viewer is asked to anticipate the logic.  That the rejection of ageing is part of our age is then no mystery. But it is not always obvious that the characters trapped in the film take us a step further: and we are not helped by the usually effective Gael Garcia Bernal as an insurance expert. Neither is his wife, a museum curator, or a surgeon without a scalpel to solve a spectacular eventuality but not a health-conscious wife, or even a giant rapper out of nowhere. In the chorus of kids condemned to premature ageing, as well as the notoriously wavy diction of the dubbed versions.

The cinematography is as splendid as some of the directorial inventions: Shyamalan knows where to place his camera to escape an order that he considers constituted. But when it comes to involving the viewer more or less fully, the matter becomes more complicated. Perhaps the director realises this: he then resorts to one of his typical twist endings as if to reassure the spectators. But this is a belated expedient.
