C’era molto attesa per l'autore norvegese reduce da un Oslo, 31 agosto ispirato da Le feu follet  scritto nel 1931 da Drieu La Rochelle, dall'intimità melanconica, al tempo stesso leggera e consolatoria, mai didattico sulle problematiche legate alla droga. Da quella Oslo festaiola immersa nell'ultimo sole Trier è passato agli Stati Uniti, ai finanziamenti che gli hanno permesso un cast importante, una confezione sempre ambiziosa ma più (inevitabilmente?) patinata.

In Louder than Bombs c'e ancora il nucleo degli affetti, un padre (Gabriel Byrne) in difficoltà con i figli, una moglie (Isabelle Huppert) giornalista troppo assente sui fronti agitati del pianeta, una conclusione che si dovrà comprendere se dovuta al caso oppure alla volontà. Tutto commosso e fin troppo golosamente abbracciato, uno spettro così ampio da frenare l'introspezione cheavevamo amato.
