Logan-The Wolverine belongs to the not always exciting cinematic strand defined as superheroes. Luckily for him, however, he goes back in inspiration to the days of Marvel Comics, the glorious comic books that, starting in 1939, brought forth Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, Conan the Barbarian and many more. Before ending up, in 2009, in the cosy Disney cauldron. Barring (probable) second thoughts, this Logan should then represent the final act in a series of the ten films created on the X-Men; as well as the conclusion of the triptych composed of X-Men the Origins-Wolverine (2009) and Wolverine-The Immortal (2013). A detail perhaps even more relevant for the saga's legion of loyalists around the world: Logan also represents the last appearance of Hugh Jackman as the increasingly frayed mutant Wolverine, as well as Patrick Stewart as Professor X.

All these deadlines, added to the recurrence of an ambitious and somewhat underrated director like James Mangold ((Walk the Line, about Johnny Cash), ended up producing beneficial effects. Quite desecrated in this third adventure and 140 years after his birth, the legendary steel-clawed mutant finds himself as a limo driver: aged, bruised, his famous invulnerability compromised by a virus that has eroded his adamantium armour (this is 2029). He is easily located, near the Mexican border, by pursuers led by the creepy experimenter Dr Zander Ric. Although forced to take care of his dying old professor (in practice, virtual father), he will rediscover his own humanity, protecting with his last energies Laura, the little girl endowed, in his likeness, with amazing supernatural powers.

Thus, and without abdicating the traditional hyper-violent effects (warning to allergy sufferers) of bloody Marvel realism, the latter is infinitely preferable to yet another action movie. Interiorized, all at the antipodes of the less and less exciting previous special effects, the film is almost a melodrama. Pure western, heartfelt and dusky, not without intimate moments, on the melancholic trail of films like Clint Eastwood's The Merciless. Of a masterpiece like George Stevens' Shane (1953), certainly ignored by new generations, and here dutifully evoked in the background.

A little predictable in its violence and monotonous as a road movie, Logan is wise in its tricks. Surprisingly political and topical in the way it forces us to reflect on the cruel absurdity of borders. In repeating to us, in its beautiful finale, how unimaginative those young migrants forced to face the eternal condition of being different are.
