____________________________________________________________________________________

As is clear from its title, A Star is Born you have already seen. Not only is it a remake of A Star is Born, filmed in 1937 by William Wellman and in turn already indebted to an earlier A che prezzo Hollywood directed in 1932 by George Cukor. But of a plot that over time has become a cult object; so much so that it has been reprised three more times, starting with the masterpiece still directed by Cukor in 1954.

Opening out of competition at the recent Venice Film Festival, this latest version was to be directed by Clint Eastwood; it was ultimately directed by Bradley Cooper in his directorial debut, after the growing career as an actor we know. Lady Gaga will also intervene later, as Eastwood's first idea was to employ Beyoncé.

The singer's challenge was undoubtedly an unprejudiced one, as she was to join the fabulous line-up of performers that had already enabled Wellman to win the only Oscar of his career, beginning with Fredric March and Janet Gaynor. Then, in 1954, came the knockout performance of the second Cukor version: James Mason with a legendary Judy Garland, the only singer to win the statuette. Not forgetting, finally, that the star of the second remake directed by Frank Pierson in 1976 would be a certain Barbra Streisand...

With such a weight behind her, Lady Gaga is, almost surprisingly, one of the winning bets in this latest A Star is Born. The melodrama is indeed strange: the acerbic country singer Ally who falls in love with Jackson Maine, the star of declining success, accomplices alcohol and drugs. The irresistible rise of the former is gradually reflected in the progressive decline, professional and human, of the latter.

Debutant director Bradley Cooper captures the overflowing energy of his actors with great intuition; even if the film, almost strangely, is as if split in two. A first part in which everything seems to coincide perfectly: a vibrant, straightforward yet vulnerable, soapy Lady Gaga, cleansed of all the physical and ornamental trappings to which we are accustomed. Romantically alongside her Bradley Cooper, barely embarrassed by the dual role of actor and director. A passion. A little nutty, but respectful of the intimate, justified by the music (composed by the singer), the exhilaratingly captured live sequences, the general rhythm, the settings.

Then, the second part of the film: where the screenplay often becomes confused, the obvious theme of self-destruction even badly portrayed (as in the even clumsy sequence of the Grammys award ceremony) looming over, progressively preventing any further investigation. Starting with the failure to analyse the role of the environment, society, the values at stake. Sequins and ballerinas are rampant: but something more had to be uncovered, after the beautiul initial naturalness.
