______________________________________________________________________________

Kevin has already revealed to his psychiatrist twenty-three different personalities. But the 24th, the most ambiguous and obviously threatening one, he still keeps well hidden inside (otherwise we wouldn't even have the film). Driven to kidnap three teenage girls, including the quick-witted Casey, Kevin will have his work cut out for him to deal with all that coexists in his subconscious...

A critically acclaimed author in the 2000s, favoured by a great popular success that allowed him to be cast in luxury, Night Shyamalan's horror-fantastic-metaphysical films (The Sixth Sense (1999), Signs (2001), The Village (2004)) seemed to be on the downward slope. For some critics, this latest feature (free, perhaps, from the constraints imposed by the aforementioned sumptuous casts) seems to give him a fresh start.

The gist of the matter at first glance (three young girls kidnapped in a cellar) is not the greatest of novelties. But what makes the Indian-born director's work so much better is his superior, at times fascinating, directorial intuition. The dynamics of the film's first sequences (a father at the supermarket who has the three girls stolen from under his nose by the psychopath on duty) are enough to alert us. What follows in the claustrophobic spaces will in fact be enhanced by the quality of certain looks of the filmmaker. Surprising in its not at all convoluted screenplay, perfectly interpreted by the disturbing James McAvoy well contrasted by the quick twenty year old Anya Taylor-Joy, Split has something to delight the aficionados of the genre. And to intrigue even those most resistant to the post-Hitchcockian thriller.
