A filmmaker sometimes ranks among the greats because, far from betraying his own concerns, he manages to express them in a way that is always different and innovative. An itinerary, at first sight aesthetic, that leads him to an artistic, but also psychological and moral deepening.

An author at the pinnacle of contemporary American cinema, James Gray first made an impression with the tough and spectacular succession of three splendid crime films, Little Odessa (1994), The Yards (2000) and We Own the Night (2007). But, already with the almost exhilarating Two Lovers (2008), and definitively with the painful and underrated The Immigrant (Once Upon a Time in New York) (2013), it became clear just how much those labels were clinging to him. And how, far more decisive than the exciting virtuosities in the depiction of physical violence, were other marking aspects of his work: the issues addressed within the characters, the confrontation between the individual and the society around him, the ambiguity of the affections, the conflicts within the family unit.

This is why, before anything else, Lost Civilisation is surprising for the courage of questioning itself on the part of such an established artist. The story, a historical one, is that of Percival Harrison Fawcett, one of the great explorers of the 20th century. He accepted a commission from the Royal Geographical Society to go to the Amazon to map the then unexplored frontiers between Brazil and Bolivia. Driven, not so much by the ambitions and illusions of an era, a culture and a social class. But, by the frustration of a failed military career; due to an offspring deemed not up to Victorian and Edwardian demands.

Abandoning his wife and children, almost in a sort of growing detachment, Fawcett will face that risky journey eight times. Only in part because he is seduced by the treacherous mysteries of the unknown, by the vertigo of the encounter with the unexplored jungle, with its 'savages' to be civilised, the river to be ascended in the delirium of reaching the springs of Myth. But because he is obsessed by a fixed idea: that of having discovered, beyond the jungle, a vanished civilisation: the city of Z of the original title.

Moving away for the first time from the New York of his masterpieces, James Gray thus follows that delirious comings and goings in his film: for The Lost City of Z is not, contrary to what might appear at first sight, Werner Herzog's Aguirre, or Francis Coppola's Apocalypse Now. Rather, it is a reflection in images of how one can evolve from the physicality of matter into the spirituality of reason and dreams.
