A story between the victim and the executioner; in this case, between a mild-mannered dog shearer and the former boxer who terrorises those around him. Relationships between individuals, however, can evolve, as Matteo Garrone explains: 'Marcello Fonte's sweetness, his ancient face that seems to come from a vanished Italy, helped clear up my doubts about how to deal with the often hostile subject matter of Dogman. For years it had both attracted and repelled me: the story of a character who, in an attempt to redeem a life of humiliation, deludes himself that he is finally free, and with him his neighbourhood, perhaps the world. But instead the latter remains unaffected, almost indifferent'.

The story from which the author of the film was inspired (very freely, he is keen to emphasise) is one of the darkest in the post-war Roman chronicle. It is that of Pietro De Negri, nicknamed the 'Canaro della Magliana', a peaceful little man who quietly runs his shop, lovingly looking after his daughter Sofia. It is true that Marcello has already had some vague history with the law; and he distributes, to make ends meet at the end of the month, small doses of cocaine between dogs he prepares for beauty contests. But his real problem is called Simone, the brutal thug who slashes and persecutes the inhabitants of that absurd, dilapidated city offshoot bordering the sea (in fact, the Domitian Riviera).

Marcello suffers Simone, reluctantly and almost naively accompanies her in the course of her nocturnal misdeeds; the victim of an indefinable subservience that will end up being clamorously overturned. In an ambiguity that Garrone himself explains as follows: "Dogman is not just a film about revenge or liberation, although all this is constantly at stake. Nor is it about the eternal theme between the weak and the overpowering. Rather, it is a questioning of us; of a man who progressively loses his innocence'.

Buoyed by its splendid protagonist (Male Interpretation Prize at Cannes), set in the chiaroscuros of a setting that is impossible to forget, immersed in a poetic tone that is never exaggerated, the film results in a scabrous and paradoxical fact. But, apart from the filings by which Garrone rightly takes certain distances, it is for another reason that Dogman never regresses into horror conventions. While the themes still revolve around those of Gomorra, based on Saviano's novel that won him the Grand Prix at Cannes 2008: however progressively they emerge, it is never individual destinies that count, but social and anthropological ones. In a discourse that expands, beyond all boundaries, thanks to the strength of the overall picture.

Since the Neapolitan taxidermist of L'imbalsamatore in 2002, Garrone's cinema has always distanced itself from the gory facts of a world in the grip of corruption and neglect. But the director uses them each time forcefully to move away from it, in search of the social motivations of the settings even more than the psychological ones of the characters.
