An accident, a suicide, a murder? The reason for the interest in the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2023 should not be revealed. Because one of the remarkable qualities of this 'French-style detective film' (as Justine Triet called it in its fourth, increasingly mature run) lies precisely in the existence of that question.

A man, the victim we never get to see in the film, is found dead in the snow. At the foot of the chalet where his German-born writer companion (a shifty, formidable Sandra Hüller), his 11-year-old son Daniel, who is visually impaired, and his dog Snoop live. But for sure, in this story built on the progressive absence of certainties, there are only two things. For the man, his rehearsed fall from the window. For his companion, the unfathomable but also absolutely gaping hole of suspicion, which will lead her into the dock.

ANATOMY OF A FALL, however, is only conveniently a prison movie, the genre that gave Hollywood masterpieces such as Billy Wilder's STALAG 17, Otto Preminger's ANATOMY OF A MURDER or Steve McQueen's HUNGER. Rather, it is a film about a couple, unnecessarily plumbed in the intimacy imposed by confined spaces. Thus dwelling, isolated in the adjacent woods, but which only the son with blurred vision seems eager to walk through, accompanied by the dog Snoop.

ANATOMY OF A FALL is thus not a film about a trial, destined to turn in on itself; in the image of that public prosecutor to whom too much space has been given. One of the usual limitations of a film that runs over two hours. It is the closeness with the characters, despite the increasing impossibility of knowing their authentic profile, that propels the film towards a conclusion almost imposed on the viewer. The intimacy with Sandra then drives a film with an ambitious screenplay (signed by Triet with Arthur Harari) that sticks in the memory. The anatomy is no longer that of a fall.
